Contents and Schedule

Diploma in Artificial Intelligence consists of six two-day study modules utilizing intensive in-class sessions and learning by doing. Covered topics include fundamentals of data and AI as well as contemporary AI technologies and applications. You will also hear practical case examples from companies like OP, Yle, Stora Enso and Fourkind.

The study modules are complemented by individual exercises and project work, which enables you to apply the acquired skills into your daily work right away. In the last part of the program participants can select between a technical study track requiring programming skills or a business study track focusing on business applications.

Instructors

Teemu Roos

Teemu Roos is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki.

Roos' research interests include the theory and applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. He also teaches introductory courses on these topics with a total of up to 500 students annually. He has developed applications of AI in areas such as mobile computing, genomics, epidemiology, quantum physics, and digital humanities.

Teemu Roos received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Helsinki in 2007.

Rohit Babbar

Rohit Babbar is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University.

His research interests include shallow and deep models for large-scale AI systems.

Antti Honkela

Antti Honkela is an Assistant Professor of Statistics at the University of Helsinki and the co-coordinator of the Research Programme in Privacy-preserving and Secure AI at the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence FCAI.

He holds a joint appointment at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Public Health.

Honkela's research interests include statistical machine learning, computational statistics, privacy-preserving machine learning and their applications especially in computational biology. He has taught numerous courses on these topics both in Finland and abroad. Honkela obtained his doctoral degree in machine learning from Helsinki University of Technology in 2005.

Alex Jung

Alex Jung is Assistant Professor for Machine Learning within the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University.

He heads the research group "Machine Learning for Big Data" which studies fundamental limits and efficient algorithm for machine learning problems involving massive datasets. Jung is teaching the main courses at Aalto University on machine learning and artificial intelligence. The recent edition of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Basic Principles have attracted around 500 and 900 students, respectively.

Kimmo Karhu

Kimmo Karhu is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Aalto University Department of Computer Science and a Platform Strategy Consultant at Fourkind.

Karhu is an expert on platform business models and a seasoned teacher on digital strategy. By combining hands-on industry experience with academic thinking, he seeks to explain how AI, machine learning, and other technologies can be leveraged for scaling platform business. Karhu's recent doctoral thesis analyses open platform strategizing and digital tactics in mobile ecosystems.

Michael Mathioudakis

Michael Mathioudakis is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki.

His research interests include web mining, data science, and optimized data processing. He also teaches postgraduate courses on computational social science, network analysis, and data management.

Prof. Mathioudakis received a PhD in computer Science from the University of Toronto in 2013.

Mats Sjöberg

Mats Sjöberg is a postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University, Department of Computer Science.  His research focuses in particular on deep learning and computer vision applications. 

Sjöberg has a long teaching experience and currently lectures the popular Deep Learning course at the University of Helsinki. Sjöberg received his doctoral degree from Aalto University in 2014, and has since then also worked at the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT.  He has been a lead organizer in the MediaEval Benchmarking Initiative for several years, and is the author of more than 40 scientific publications.

Antti Ukkonen

Antti Ukkonen is an Academy Research Fellow at the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki. He has 15 years of experience in research and development of data analysis algorithms.

Prior to joining UoH, Antti has worked as a data scientist at Yahoo! Research, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, and Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. He has published over 40 scientific articles in international journals and conferences on the topics of data mining, machine learning, and algorithms. He obtained his doctoral degree from Helsinki University of Technology in 2008.
